Disneyland: Source and Cyc Lighting

On Friday I went to Disneyland and captured some photos that relate to creating natural lighting on stage.

In this photo the Sun, the source, is behind us. But because the sun is so powerful its light can wrap around us even when it is behind us. In lighting we achieve this same aesthetic with a high intensity back light as a source, a low intensity front light, and a tonal to fill in the shadows.

This picture reminds me of a sunset that might be recreated on a cyc. Specifically, I saw a production that took place at a carnival and in front of the cyc there was a sheet of luan, painted black, and cut out to look like the silhouette of a carnival that lined the bottom of the cyc.

  1. What a beautiful soft sunset for such a happy place to be! And yes, the sun is reflected off of so many surfaces that we get a nice even amount of bounce and fill light :) Great images!
